Getting Around Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki is Greece's second-largest city and an excellent urban base for day trips. City traffic can be busy, but the real value of a rental car is for excursions outside the city.
Halkidiki, with its three peninsulas of Kassandra, Sithonia, and Athos, is 1-1.5 hours south with some of northern Greece's best beaches. Day trips to the ancient capital of Pella (Alexander the Great's birthplace) and the royal tombs at Vergina are easily reachable by car.
Thessaloniki Airport (SKG), Makedonia Airport, is 15 km southeast of the city centre. Drive to the centre takes 25 minutes, up to 45 in peak traffic.
Top Day Trips from Thessaloniki
Halkidiki: Kassandra Peninsula (80 km, 1 hour)
The closest of Halkidiki's three "fingers", Kassandra is lined with sandy beaches, resort villages, and beach bars. Drive the coast road for a different beach each day — Sani, Kallithea, Possidi, and Pefkochori. The peninsula loop is about 120 km, perfect for a full day.
Halkidiki: Sithonia Peninsula (110 km, 1.5 hours)
Wilder and less developed than Kassandra, with pine forests reaching the waterline and hidden coves via dirt roads. Vourvourou bay, Kavourotrypes (Orange Beach), and Porto Koufo — a dramatic natural harbour — are highlights. The 100 km peninsula loop rewards slow driving.
Vergina and the Royal Tombs (75 km, 1 hour)
Drive southwest to Vergina (ancient Aigai), where the unlooted tomb of Philip II was discovered in 1977. The underground museum with the gold larnax and crown is one of Greece's most impressive archaeological experiences. Combine with a stop at Pella on the return.
Naoussa Wine Region (90 km, 1.5 hours)
The Xinomavro grape produces complex reds that rival top Burgundy. Visit Boutari, Kir-Yianni, or Alpha Estate for tastings with vineyard views. A half-day or full-day trip for wine lovers.
Meteora (230 km, 2.5 hours)
The monasteries perched on towering rock pillars are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Leave early, visit 2-3 monasteries, lunch in Kalabaka, return via highway. A rental car is the only way to do this as a day trip from Thessaloniki.

Year-round destination: Unlike islands, Thessaloniki thrives in every season. Summer is hot and ideal for Halkidiki beaches.
Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures for sightseeing. The food and nightlife scene thrives year-round.

Tolls: Egnatia Odos (E90) connects west to Ioannina, east to Kavala. About 10-15 euros per direction.
Fuel: Plentiful in the city and highways. Sparse on the tip of Sithonia — fill up before the loop.
Thessaloniki's Food Scene
Widely regarded as Greece's gastronomic capital. The Modiano and Kapani markets are a feast for the senses, the Ladadika district is packed with tavernas. Street food is exceptional — bougatsa, koulouri, and legendary souvlaki.
