A scenic road from Thessaloniki towards the beaches of Halkidiki

Thessaloniki Day Trips by Car

Why Thessaloniki Is Perfect for Day Trips

Thessaloniki sits at the crossroads of northern Greece, with modern motorways radiating in every direction. Within 1–2 hours of driving, you can reach turquoise beaches, ancient royal tombs, snow-capped mountains, waterfalls, and lakeside villages. The city itself is a vibrant food and culture destination (explore our guide to Thessaloniki's centre), but renting a car opens up a whole region of northern Greece that most tourists never see.

Rent a car in Thessaloniki and use the city as your base for these six routes.

1. Halkidiki Beaches (60–120 km, 1–2 hours)

The three-fingered peninsula of Halkidiki is Thessaloniki's beach playground. Each "finger" has a different character:

  • Kassandra (first finger) — the nearest and most developed. Beach bars, resorts, and family-friendly sandy beaches. Kalithea and Sani are highlights. ~80 km, 1 hour.

  • Sithonia (second finger) — wilder and more scenic. Pine forests meet turquoise coves. Vourvourou, Kavourotrypes (Orange Beach), and Porto Koufo are stunning. ~120 km, 1.5–2 hours.

  • Mount Athos view — while the monastic peninsula itself is restricted, you can drive to the tip of Sithonia or take a boat from Ouranoupoli to see the monasteries from the sea.

Tip: go early on weekends — Thessaloniki locals descend on Halkidiki en masse on Saturday mornings.

2. Vergina Royal Tombs (80 km, 1 hour)

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Aigai (modern Vergina) is where Philip II of Macedon — father of Alexander the Great — was buried. The underground museum housing the royal tombs is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Greece. The golden funeral wreaths, armour, and the intact painted tomb facades are breathtaking.

Combine with a stop in Veria (the "little Jerusalem" with its old Jewish quarter and Byzantine churches) on the return journey.

3. Edessa Waterfalls (90 km, 1.5 hours)

Edessa is the "city of waters" — a hilltop town famous for its waterfalls that cascade 70 metres into the valley below. The walk behind the main waterfall is an unforgettable experience. The surrounding area is lush with plane trees and water channels, and the town has excellent traditional restaurants.

On the way back, stop at the wetlands of Lake Vegoritida for birdwatching, or detour south to the ski town of Naoussa (known for its xinomavro wine).

4. Mount Olympus & Litochoro (90 km, 1.5 hours)

The home of the ancient Greek gods is surprisingly accessible from Thessaloniki. Drive south on the motorway to Litochoro, the gateway village, and from there take the mountain road up to Prionia (1,100m elevation), the starting point for summit hikes. Even if you don't hike, the drive up through the gorge is spectacular.

The village of Litochoro has tavernas, cafes, and a lively square. The nearby beach of Platamonas sits below a Crusader castle — perfect for combining mountain and sea in one day.

5. Kavala & Thasos Ferry (160 km, 2 hours)

Kavala is a beautiful port city built on a hillside overlooking the Aegean. The old town (Panagia quarter), the Roman aqueduct, and the fortress offer a full morning of exploration. From Kavala, you can catch a ferry to Thasos island (1.5 hours) for a beach day.

6. Pella & Lake Kerkini (110–150 km, 1.5–2 hours)

The ancient capital of Macedonia, Pella was the birthplace of Alexander the Great. The archaeological site and museum house remarkable mosaic floors. From Pella, continue north to Lake Kerkini — one of Europe's most important wetlands, home to pelicans, flamingos, and water buffalo. Boat tours run from the village of Kerkini.

Practical Tips for Day Trips

  1. Motorway tolls — the Egnatia Odos (east-west) and Athens motorway (south) are toll roads. Ask your rental agency about an e-pass, or keep cash/card ready for toll booths.

  2. Start early — leave Thessaloniki by 8–9am to avoid city traffic and make the most of your day.

  3. Fuel is easy — petrol stations are plentiful along all major routes. No need to worry about running low.

  4. Combine routes — Vergina + Edessa works as a single long day trip. Kavala + Philippi (Roman ruins) is another natural combination.

  5. Pick up at the airport — if you're flying into SKG, grab your rental at Thessaloniki Airport and start exploring immediately.
