Driving in Zakynthos: Scenic Routes & Beaches

Why Drive in Zakynthos?

Zakynthos (Zante) is an island of dramatic contrasts: towering white cliffs on the west, gentle sandy beaches on the east, and a mountainous interior dotted with olive-shaded villages. The island is compact enough (about 40 km north to south) to explore in a few days, but the roads are winding enough that having your own vehicle — whether a car, scooter, or ATV — makes all the difference.

The famous Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach is only accessible by boat, but the iconic viewpoint above it requires a drive to the west coast. The loggerhead sea turtle nesting beaches of Laganas are on the south. And the Blue Caves are at the island's northernmost tip. No bus connects all these in a single day — but your own wheels can.

Road Conditions in Zakynthos

  • Main roads — the road from Zakynthos Town south to Laganas and north to Alykes is well-maintained and straightforward. Two lanes, clear signage.

  • West coast roads — the route to Navagio viewpoint and the hilltop villages of Volimes and Anafonitria is scenic but winding. The final stretch to the viewpoint is narrow with limited parking.

  • Mountain interior — quiet, narrow roads through villages like Keri, Machairado, and Loucha. Minimal traffic, stunning views, occasionally steep.

  • Beach access — most popular beaches have paved access. A few (like Porto Limnionas) involve a final unpaved section. No off-road vehicle needed, just patience.

Best Driving Routes in Zakynthos

1. Navagio Viewpoint Circuit (50 km, half day) — Zakynthos Town → Volimes → Navagio viewpoint → Porto Vromi (boat to Shipwreck Beach) → Anafonitria monastery → return. The most iconic drive on the island. Arrive before 10am or after 4pm to avoid the tour-bus crowd at the viewpoint.

2. Blue Caves and North Coast (40 km, half day) — Zakynthos Town → Alykes → Cape Skinari (boat to Blue Caves) → Xigia sulphur beach → return via Katastari, the largest village on the island.

3. South Coast and Turtles (30 km, half day) — Zakynthos Town → Kalamaki → Laganas → Keri Lighthouse (sunset viewpoint) → Marathonisi island boat trip. The Laganas Bay area is a protected marine park for loggerhead sea turtles.

4. Interior Villages (25 km, 2–3 hours) — a quiet drive through the mountainous centre: Machairado (church with the finest bell tower) → Killiomeno → Agalas → Keri → Porto Limnionas. This route shows Zakynthos beyond the beach.

Tips for Driving in Zakynthos

  1. Navagio timing — the viewpoint faces west and is backlit in the morning. For photos, go in the afternoon. For crowds, go early morning or late afternoon.

  2. Turtle rules — in Laganas Bay, speed limits are strictly enforced near nesting beaches. Boats and vehicles must respect the marine park boundaries.

  3. Fuel — petrol stations are clustered around Zakynthos Town, Laganas, and Alykes. Fill up before heading to the west coast or mountain villages.

  4. Parking at viewpoints — popular spots like Navagio viewpoint and Keri Lighthouse have limited parking. Scooters and ATVs have a clear advantage here.

  5. September is perfect — July and August are crowded and hot. In September, the beaches are quieter, the sea is warmest, and rentals are cheaper. See our autumn driving guide.
