Chania Old Town: A Walk Through the Venetian Harbour
Chania's Old Town is one of the best-preserved in the Mediterranean — a walkable knot of Venetian and Ottoman streets wrapped around a working harbour. Here's how to see it.
The Venetian Harbour & lighthouse
The postcard begins at the harbour, where a curve of faded townhouses faces the 16th-century Egyptian lighthouse. Walk the mole out to its base for the classic view back at the town; come at sunset when the stone turns gold.
Topanas & the backstreets
Behind the waterfront, the Topanas quarter is a maze of ochre lanes, ateliers and boutique hotels in restored Venetian houses. There's no wrong turn — the pleasure is getting lost. Don't miss Skrydlof (Leather) Street, still lined with workshops.
Splantzia
East of the harbour, Splantzia is the quieter, more local half of the Old Town: shady squares, the old mosque, and tavernas where you'll hear more Greek than English.
The Municipal Market
The cross-shaped covered Agora (market) is the place for Cretan cheese, honey, raki and herbs to take home.
Practical tip
The Old Town is pedestrian and the surrounding streets are tight — park outside the centre (or leave the rental car at your hotel) and explore on foot. For beaches, day trips and where to eat, see our full Chania travel guide.
